MULTI-MESSENGER ASTRONOMY : STUDY OF EXTREME TRANSIENTS IN GAMMA RAYS AND NEUTRINOS

The thesis will take place within the High Energy Astrophysics (AHE) group of the APC laboratory. APC is at the heart of the development of multi-messenger astronomy of extreme transient phenomena in the Universe.

The thesis will draw on the involvement of the AHE group in various leading projects (HESS/CTA, SVOM, Antares/KM3NeT, etc.) to study extreme transient phenomena such as eruptions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), or possibly fast radio bursts (FRBs). The doctoral student will participate in the implementation of observation strategies, in particular for the HESS collaboration and its network of telescopes in Namibia dedicated to very high energy gamma-ray astronomy (TeV domain). In this context, the candidate will be required to participate in taking data on site and analyzing it in detail. He/She will also participate in the standardization of data obtained from gamma-ray, neutrino and possibly X-ray detectors, based on existing tools in Python (GammaPy software suite) and will contribute to their development in a multi-messenger perspective. 

Based on this data, the candidate will contribute to the understanding of these violent and rapid phenomena by exploring the new perspectives offered by the joint adjustment of physics models directly on data from several instruments and messengers. The thesis project also aims to best prepare for such studies with the next generation of instruments currently under construction, such as CTA in the TeV field. CTA will enter the 'Early Science' phase with the start of operation of several telescopes during the thesis.
