Affectation

Université de Paris, AIM (Lamarck) /APC (Condorcet)

5 rue Thomas Mann 75013 Paris

Date d’embauche prévue

Octobre 2020

Contact : Prof. Sylvain Chaty (sylvain.chatyatu-paris.fr); Dr. Eric Chassande- Mottin (ecmatapc.in2p3.fr), Dr. Thierry Foglizzo (foglizzoatcea.fr).

Job title

Research fellow in Astrophysics

Institute

Université de Paris, AIM (Lamarck) /APC (Condorcet)

5 rue Thomas Mann 75013 Paris

Foreseen Hiring date

October 2020

Duration

1 year full time, to be renewed at least once upon validation of LabEx Scientific Council

Salary

See Human Ressource department of University of Paris

Level of studies

PhD in Astrophysics

Experience required

All applications will be considered, an experience post-PhD being an advantage.

Working context

The research fellow will work at the interface between AIM and APC, two leading institutes in Astrophysics, within the Physics Department of University of Paris.

Missions

Post-doctoral research fellow in Astrophysics recruited with funding from LabEx UnivEarthS, whose work will consist in studying the evolution of binary stellar systems, aiming at identifying the progenitors of compact objects (black holes, neutron stars) potentially merging at the end of their lives and detected by the detectors gravitational waves, such as LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, and the future LIGO-India, LISA, etc.

Activities

The activities will be twofold: 1. Development of 1D models of evolution of binary stellar systems, using the MESA 1D-hydrodynamical stellar evolution code, and a binary population synthesis code; and 2. Observation of binary systems, and exploitation of databases (proprietary data or ESO archive, Gaia DR…). The research fellow will join the Virgo collaboration, via the APC group, within the Rates and Population sub-group. More détails on : http://www.univearths.fr/fr/projets-du-labex-univearths/projets-interfac...

Expected skills

A PhD in astrophysics is required, ideally with an experience in stellar evolution, population synthesis, compact objects or gravitational waves. The post-doctoral researcher must master computer tools, in particular knowing how to program in Python, and integrate quickly into a working group, reporting on progress during team meetings. Scientific writing skills will be appreciated (writing proposals, scientific articles, progress reports, etc.).

Constraints and risks

Usual working hours (see Human Ressource department of University of Paris)

Application procedure

Contact : Prof. Sylvain Chaty (Chair) (sylvain.chatyatu-paris.fr); Dr. Eric Chassande-Mottin (ecmatapc.in2p3.fr), Dr. Thierry Foglizzo (foglizzoatcea.fr). The candidate will send to Prof. S. Chaty: CV, publication list, motivation letter, and two reference letters must be sent directly, before July 31, 2020. We encourage informal pre-application contacts.
