Sky Surveys and BigData

In February 2016 Volker Beckmann (FACe / APC) gave a guest seminar at Hamburg Observatory about the evolution of data treatment in the context of large sky surveys. Starting from the era of astronomical surveys by eye (in the example of the Bonner Durchmusterung), the presentation discussed the impact of photographic plates on the development. Here especially the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS) was disussed and its unique approach to use objective prism spectra on a large scale. Additional examples of large sky surveys and their data treatment were the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), Gaia, and finally Euclid and LSST as future experiments.
