BACKGROUND

INFIERI is a training network for the development of intelligent devices and tools for cutting-edge applications in Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Medical Physics and Telecommunications. The network aims to develop new technologies and algorithms, with a common theme of placing intelligence into data-acquisition, processing and transmission technologies very close to the information source. We consider three main applications: pixel detectors in the harsh radiation environment of CMS at LHC; novel SiPM devices for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and an array of Cherenkov detectors spread over kilometres, forming a gamma-ray telescope (CTA). The chosen applications require extremely rapid “front-end” data processing, event selection, efficient transmission, and high-selectivity. The training programme is based on 5 technical work packages, focused on VDSM CMOS technology, 3D vertical interconnectivity, Silicon Photonics and Optical Wireless Communications, FPGA and CAM memories, and ACTA backplanes. The network comprises 5 academic nodes, 4 European Lab nodes, and 2 companies (Philips and THALES-SA) for a total of 11 full partners, all leading, in their respective fields. Such a multi-disciplinary approach will provide unique opportunities for the career progression of the trainees and strengthen important research partnerships within Europe. International associated partners in Europe (CERN, and other leading companies and Universities), the USA (FNAL, Purdue University and companies) and Korea (Seoul National University and Samsung) bring advanced and complementary technical capabilities. The combination of the technologies addressed promises to deliver dramatically increased performance in all application areas on the timescale of this project. The trained individuals will represent a highly valuable resource for European industry and academic research, helping to maintain European leadership in the forefront technologies addressed.

WORKSHOP GOALS

The workshop will

   • Give a first complete presentation of the INFIERI Project to all the partners;
   • A first Part will give an introduction to the three Fields of Applications of INFIERI,i.e. AstroPhysics, Particle Physics and Medical Physics, and to the two major technological fields in this project, i.e The Novel Telecom Technologies and Advances in the Microelectronics Fields, by highly skilled experts;
   • The second part will provide a presentation by representatives of each Partner of this consortium (full partners and associated partners) of their interests and foreseen contributions in this Project;
   • The third Part will be devoted to the very preliminary presentation of the Workpackages that will constitute the INFIERI network;
and
   • It will be concluded by the presentation of a WorkPlan and a forum of discussion will be organized around it.

The hope is that there will be a real attendance, in person, of representatives of each node over the full duration of this meeting. This is in order to get a real start for this ambitious project. The hope is thus that the workshop will go beyond an one-off event and that it will not only inform but also instigate fruitful, long-term collaborations. For those not able to attend in person the meeting in Paris, a video-conference connection will be provided over the full duration of the workshop.

ORGANIZATION

The workshop will gather researchers, engineers and industrial representatives from all the INFIERI Partners. But it is restricted, for already PI issues, to the people that will really collaborate to the INFIERI project. So it is not public access and the talks will be available to only those people. See program for more details including the list of topics and the current schedule. The time will be also left for informal discussions and interactions.
